Abstract
Spreadsheets are usually a complimentary solution, or even an alternative to complicated or poorly engineered information systems. They are the most frequent solution to the gap caused by different paces in evolution of business processes and upgrades of present, previously implemented information systems. Research suggests that about 90% of companies use spreadsheets in financial planning, budgeting, business forecasting, etc.
This paper presents a research in progress, carried out by the authors as to determine actual reasons for using spreadsheets, as well ways they are used. The research methodology applied involves, among else, a stage dealing with exploring historical aspects of emergence and development of spreadsheets. Initial results of this stage are presented in the paper.
