Abstract

It is late at night on a Friday, and I am dashing off a rant about the failure of the spreadsheet error research to use good science.

It's something we need to change if we are going to be able to move forward and be taken seriously.

Convergent validity in spreadsheet error research

We have three sources of information about spreadsheet errors and error detection:

  • Controlled laboratory experiments of spreadsheet development and error inspection.
  • Field inspections (which attempt to detect as many errors as possible).
  • Most importantly, there is human error research, which has been going on for generations in many fields and is highly convergent in its own findings.
